Access Rules
General access rules during COSMIC run:
When ALICE is in data taking mode, there is no access to the cavern. This is true when the magnet is ON and also when it is OFF.
Once a week there will be a half day access window, where the magnets are OFF and the entire cavern and also the magnet can be accessed. For a start this access window is Wednesday’s 9:00 to 12:00. The access requests are collected by the RC in the daily meetings. The access planning will be done after the Tuesday daily meeting i.e. around 17:00 (how many people, where, what intervention, when etc.).
After the access, a search of the cavern will be performed to make sure there are no items left from the interventions.
Exceptions:
Exceptions can be made for inspection of equipment in the cooling plant and rack areas.
No work is allowed during this kind of access, i.e. one cannot bring a toolbox etc.
This means:
- NO access in front of L3 magnet (nor into the magnet)
- NO access around the muon detector (nor into the FASS), access on the muon level is only allowed to reach the C rack area
- ONLY cross from A to C side on level 4 (racks) NOT on level 2 (besides the L3 magnet)
- Crossing from I to O on the level 4, C side walkway (above MTR) is allowed
The nature of the intervention, names of people, start time, expected duration shall be announced to the SLIMOS.
After the intervention a small report should be written in the detector logbook by the people doing the intervention.>
Note: These rules are true in both cases, when the magnet is ON and when it is OFF. The reason is that we want to be able to turn the magnet ON without doing a search – if people can go anywhere during magnet OFF periods we completely lose control over the area.
Magnetic field ON
Accessible areas:
- ACCESS in cavern is strictly limited to cooling plants and rack areas only.
- NO access in front of L3 magnet (nor into the magnet, obviously)
- NO access around the muon detector (nor into the FASS, obviously), access on the muon level is only allowed to reach the C rack area,
- ONLY cross from A to C side on level 4 (racks) NOT on level 2 (besides the L3 magnet)
- Crossing from I to O on the level 4, C side walkway (above MTR) is allowed
Restrictions and risks:
- No access when using pacemaker or hearing aid
- Access allowed only for inspection/verification. NO work allowed
- Wear safety equipment (safety shoes, light, and helmet)
- Respect the 2 –person rule, if not possible announce the expected duration to the SLIMOS and leave mobile phone number. SLIMOS will call you when no sign after expected duration elapsed.
- Do not bring down credit cards etc (risk of wiping out due to magnetic field), also watches might be affected.
- Limit the number of metallic items you bring down, do not move metallic objects
Traceability:
- Nature of intervention and start, expected duration and end of intervention shall be announced to the SLIMOS
- Leave a mobile phone number with the SLIMOS
- SLIMOS will enter names/detectors in logbook (under safety) and time of start and end of intervention
- Each intervention should be described in the relevant detector logbook by the people doing the intervention
