INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF SUBNUCLEAR PHYSICS

Dear Colleagues

I bring to your attention the forthcoming

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF SUBNUCLEAR PHYSICS
50th Course: WHAT WE WOULD LIKE LHC TO GIVE US
Erice, 23 June - 2 July 2012

As in the long tradition of the school , also this year the program
will be rich of lectures covering the wide range of
topics related to the LHC physics. As usual, the school is
particularly addressed to students, with stimulating discussions with the
invited experts and a session dedicated to the presentation of their work.

More details and the application forms are available in

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF SUBNUCLEAR PHYSICS
50th Course: WHAT WE WOULD LIKE LHC TO GIVE US
Erice, 23 June - 2 July 2012
50th Anniversary Celebrations 2011-2012-2013

This Course will be the second of the three devoted to the celebrations
of the 50th Anniversary of the Subnuclear Physics School which was started
in 1961 by Antonino Zichichi with John Bell at CERN and formally established
in 1962 by Bell, Blackett, Weisskopf, Rabi and Zichichi in Geneva (CERN);
the first course being at Erice in 1963. This is why the celebrations
will last three years.

The EMFCSC has decided to give special funds for the three years celebrations
of the 50th Anniversary. These funds will be devoted each year to the
selection of 50 excellent fellows by the board of Invited Scientists and
Lecturers.

The lectures will be, as usual, fully devoted to the latest and most
significant achievements in theoretical and in experimental physics.

TWO POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS - RELATIVISTIC HEAVY ION PHYSICS

TWO POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS
RELATIVISTIC HEAVY ION PHYSICS
UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites candidates to apply for two Postdoctoral Research Associate positions with the Relativistic Heavy Ion Physics group. Our group is working both on the ALICE experiment at the  LHC and on the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. Within ALICE our main responsibilities are focused on the Electromagnetic Calorimeter, whereas at PHENIX we are primarily working with the Muon Arm Detector. We also have a very close collaboration with the High Energy Reactions Group at ORNL, and we expect our postdocs will spend substantial time at ORNL.   We expect that one post doc will focus primarily on the ALICE experiment and the other on the PHENIX experiment. The successful candidates will be expected to mentor graduate students and to travel extensively to CERN and/or BNL. The successful candidates are required to have a Ph.D. in physics with experience in nuclear or high energy physics.

Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, a publication list, a brief research statement, and should arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to Prof. Soren Sorensen, 401 Nielsen Physics Building, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN 37996-1200 (preferably via email to sorensen@utk.edu).

We assume the successful candidates will start in the positions in the time period August 1, 2012 – January 1, 2013. The University of Tennessee is an EEO/AA/Title VI/Title IX/Section 504/ADA/ADEA institution in the provision of its education and employment programs and services.

Jardin de Capucine- short term child care - also for users!

Dear Colleagues,

The “Jardin de Capucine”, a new childcare facility built exclusively for CERN personnel, including users, has opened its doors on 1 November 2011. It is very conveniently located at only a few hundred meters from CERN entrance E, and it offers childcare facilities for children from 4 months up to 4 years of age.

CERN Management has specifically earmarked 4 places (of the 40 available) for short term child care. Short term should be understood as any period of one week to up to 3 months. A place and can be booked in advance for any period in 2012 by contacting directly the crèche. Places will be allocated on a first come/first served basis.

These 4 places have now been available for a few months, but none has ever been used. It is clear that should this situation continue, this short term child care will be discontinued.

Do not hesitate to directly contact the “Jardin de Capucine” if you need more information.

New - child care for people coming to CERN for short periods

Dear colleagues,

The “Jardin de Capucine”, a new childcare facility exclusively built for CERN personnel, has opened its doors on 1 November 2011.

Very conveniently located at only a few hundred meters from CERN entrance E, it offers childcare facilities from children from 4 months up to 4 years of age.

CERN Management has specifically earmarked 4 places (of the 40 available) for short term child care.

Short term should be understood as either a period of one week to up to 3 months, either shorter periods but at regular intervals. Turn-over on these places is expected to be high, especially if the duration is short.

These 4 places are made available as from now and can be booked in advance for any period in 2012 by contacting directly the crèche. Places will be allocated on a first come/first served basis.

After 1 year of experience, an evaluation will be made and the number of short term places will be increased or decreased to adapt to the need.

It is therefore important that the information is spread to the community of associated members of personnel as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Any ideas/feedback is welcome.

Being in contact with people coming to CERN for short periods, we ask you to help us spread the info on this opportunity to the CERN Users’ community.
